X100-ZDT Z-Direction Paper and Board Tester | Testometric India
Special Purpose Model

X100-ZDT paper and board internal bond tester for Z-direction tensile strength.

A 1 kN X100-1 based Z-direction tester for internal bond strength of paper and board, supplied with a 1000 N load cell and PBA-T541 fixture package for TAPPI T541 and ISO 15754 workflows.

1 kN frame 1000 N load cell PBA-T541 fixture TAPPI T541
Application fit

For mills and converters that need delamination risk measured in the Z direction.

ZDT is not a generic tensile test. It measures the force needed to separate paper or board through thickness, so fixture parallelism, tape bond, compression step, dwell and failure mode matter as much as the machine capacity.

  • Internal bond strength of paperboard and selected papers where cohesive strength is lower than the tape bond.
  • Board delamination checks for printing, folding, punching, converting and packaging performance.
  • Supplier and process comparison across ply structure, coating, refining, bonding and moisture changes.
  • Routine mill QA and R&D studies where maximum force at delamination must be traceable.

Standards and methods

Built around the paper and board Z-direction methods.

TAPPI T541

Internal bond strength of paperboard by Z-direction tensile loading, using double-sided tape, compression between platens and normal separation.

ISO 15754

Paper and board method for determining tensile strength in the Z direction. It applies to paper and board, not corrugated fibreboard.

Failure mode control

Valid interpretation depends on cohesive paper/board failure rather than tape release, platen misalignment or edge damage.

Force verification

Force measurement can be verified to ISO 7500-1 or ASTM E4 where the lab quality procedure requires traceable calibration.

For ZDT, the common mistake is treating the fixture as a simple pull test. The method needs controlled sample area, tape choice, compression step, dwell, platen parallelism and failure inspection.

Configuration checklist

Details to confirm before ordering.

  • Standard version, test area, block size, tape specification and sample conditioning requirement.
  • Board grade, thickness range, expected bond strength and whether failure must be reported by ply or visual mode.
  • Compression force/time, dwell time, separation speed and result units used by your mill or customer.
  • Calibration requirement, reporting format and export fields for lab information systems or SPC.
X100-ZDT Z-Direction Paper and Board Tester FAQ

Questions buyers ask before specifying this Testometric system.

Use these answers to confirm whether this model, fixture package and WinTest method fit your lab or production workflow before quotation.

What is Z-direction testing used for?
Z-direction testing measures internal bond strength through the thickness of paper and board, helping mills and converters control delamination and ply bonding.
Which methods are relevant for X100-ZDT?
TAPPI T541 and ISO 15754 are common references, but the exact method revision, tape/block setup and conditioning must be confirmed.
Why is a dedicated ZDT fixture important?
The fixture controls alignment, bonded area, pull direction and repeatability, which are critical for meaningful internal bond results.
