ViscoSensor Online Monitoring
A compact online viscosity and melt index monitoring solution for processors who need production-side MFR indication, apparent viscosity, and intrinsic viscosity trends with the tested material returned to the process.
Bring lab-relevant melt flow insight closer to the extrusion line.
ViscoSensor is designed for production and lab teams that want melt-flow information closer to the extruder, while still maintaining traceable correlation to familiar lab methods and quality-control language.
Compact measuring head
The system attaches through a single M18 pressure port or flange mount, places a platinum RTD sensor in the molten stream, and uses Vertex mercury-free pressure transducers for measurement close to the extruder. That makes installation review, temperature measurement, and pressure-transducer health central to a good deployment.
- Effective solution for online viscosity or melt index monitoring.
- No waste stream because the tested sample is returned to process.
- Online ASTM D1238 melt flow rate, ISO 1133, or JIS K 7210 support.
- Measures online apparent viscosity and intrinsic viscosity.
ViscoSensor feature set
Organized around the points production, quality, maintenance, and a senior lab reviewer will usually check before buying an online viscosity system.
Attaches to process using a single M18 pressure port or flange mounting.
Effective solution for online viscosity or melt index monitoring.
The tested sample is returned to the process.
Online melt flow rate monitoring aligned to common MFR standards.
Supports online apparent and intrinsic viscosities.
Capillaries can be changed for application-specific requirements.
Compact measuring head supports close connection to the extruder.
Designed for practical calibration in production settings.
Two Vertex Mercury Free Pressure Transducers support high accuracy.
Platinum RTD melt temperature sensor is immersed in the molten stream for accurate test temperature measurement.
What to confirm before putting ViscoSensor on a line.
The key decision is not only whether it can measure online, but whether the measurement can be trusted, maintained, and correlated to your lab standard.
Measurement objective
Define the primary output before configuration. ViscoSensor can support online melt flow rate, apparent viscosity, and intrinsic viscosity discussions, but the plant should know which value drives action.
- Online ASTM D1238 melt flow rate indication
- ISO 1133 or JIS K 7210 aligned reporting need
- Apparent or intrinsic viscosity trend monitoring
Installation review
Confirm whether the available port and surrounding hardware can support a close, stable measuring head connection without making operation or maintenance difficult.
- Single M18 pressure port or flange option
- Representative melt at the installation point
- Access for capillary changes and service
Lab correlation plan
Use a known resin grade and a defined lab method to establish correlation. Online values should be reviewed against stable offline MFR or viscosity references before relying on alarms.
- Offline melt indexer or lab viscosity baseline
- Temperature dependency and material grade review
- Acceptance bands for production release decisions
Maintenance and verification
A technical owner should define how capillaries, pressure transducers, and the RTD temperature measurement will be checked over time.
- Interchangeable capillary handling procedure
- Pressure transducer zero/span verification plan
- RTD temperature check and cleaning routine
Information to prepare before selection
Make melt quality visible while material is still moving.
Install at a representative point
Use the compact measuring head with M18 pressure port or flange mounting where the melt is stable and meaningful for quality decisions.
Measure and correlate
Track melt flow rate, apparent viscosity, or intrinsic viscosity and compare the online trend with qualified lab reference data.
Use it in quality control
Use live rheological information to detect material changes, shorten response time, and support batch or grade-level documentation.
ViscoSensor documentation and learning material
Downloadable documents and supporting technical material from FITCO's current ViscoSensor resource page.
